Avatar: The Way Of Water Review

New longer-term Avatar: The Way of Water opening weekend box office projections have the sequel more than surpassing the success of James Cameron's first film. The original 2009 sci-fi film broke all sorts of records at the box office on its path to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. Avatar's phenomenal box-office success has also drawn much attention to the amount Avatar 2 will make. While no one can predict the sequel to outgross Avatar's $2.9 billion global haul and the film's massive budget and Disney's commitment to the future of the franchise means that there's a lot of pressure for Avatar: The Way of Water to do well.

According to the new long-range tracking provided by Box Office Pro, Avatar: The Way of Water is now projected to make more than $135 million in its opening weekend in the US. The original Avatar's box office debut included a $77M opening domestically 13 years ago in December. Therefore, these projections are calling for Avatar 2's opening weekend box office to almost double the original. The projections also recommend that the sequel make $475M domestically by the end of its theatrical run, this is lower than earlier reports and about half of the amount Avatar made domestically.

A strong first weekend opening for Avatar: The Way of Water is a good opening for the sequel in the world of box-office. The reported $135M opening would mean the follow-up will make the same amount in just one weekend as it took James Cameron's first movie a full week to make. However, Avatar 2's box office will still have a tough road to surpass the original. The reason Avatar had such a remarkable box-office success lies in the film's incredible word-of-mouth and repeated viewings that helped keep the film relevant and on the screens for 234 days. This isn't commonplace, even for the biggest films. To give you an example, Top Gun: Maverick was the highest-rated film of 161 days this year.

There is little belief that Avatar: The Way of Water will be able to surpass the original film, however, it doesn't have to become the most-grossing production ever in order to be a hit. The excitement for the sequel has largely squashed the rhetoric that Avatar didn't leave a lasting impression on people in general. Even if the sequel's box office is just half the size of the first film but it still makes $1.3 billion, which would make Avatar 2's $1 billion box office an enormous success. This is enough to be the second highest-grossing movie in 2022.

There is still some pressure on the Avatar 2 box office to be good enough for James Cameron to continue his sequel ideas alive. He's contracted to make three more sequels which will include Avatar 3 already completely filmed. There is also Avatar: The Way Of Water Review being done on Avatar 4. However, the director has admitted that if the sequel's box office is disappointing and shows that audiences are not at all interested, Avatar 3 could be the end of the franchise. In this way, Avatar The Way of Water's box-office will play a huge influence on what's the next James Cameron's films.
