A generic form of the popular erectile dysfunction medication, Kamagra, has been approved for sale in the UK. It is available to purchase online from licensed pharmacies. The decision was made by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) which deemed that the chemical composition and manufacturing process of the drug are sufficiently similar to those of the already-approved medication, Sildenafil Citrate – also known as Viagra). This means that patients who already take or are currently taking Sildenafil Citrate may now be able to access the drug in its generic form, which is known as Fusalga in the UK.

What is Kamagra?

Kamagra is an oral medication that contains Sildenafil Citrate. It was originally approved in the UK as a treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) – the inability to achieve or maintain an erection that is sufficiently strong for satisfactory sexual performance. Since its introduction in 2001, it has become one of the most popular medications for ED, with around 150 million prescriptions written worldwide (Global Drug Report 2015). Due to its effectiveness and wide availability, most patients who suffer from ED are able to obtain satisfactory results from treatment with Kamagra.

However, if you are not one of these patients, it is still possible to benefit from this treatment. As with any other medication, there are associated risks and side effects, which are discussed below.

How does Kamagra work?

Kamagra works by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which is responsible for breaking down a neurotransmitter called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). The resulting buildup of cGMP leads to vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) and increased blood flow into the corpora cavernosa (the two penile chambers), resulting in an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance.

What are the risks associated with Kamagra?

There is a small risk of side effects such as headache, flushing, and rhinitis (runny nose). Less frequently, patients have presented with skin rashes and photosensitivity (an increased risk of developing a skin condition called erythema multiforme). There is also a risk of drug interactions, particularly with other PDE5 inhibitors (such as tadalafil). Because of these risks, it is extremely important to consult your doctor before taking Kamagra, especially if you are also taking any other medication.

Is there anything else I need to know?

As with any other medication, there are a few things you need to be aware of. First, make sure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in Kamagra. Second, discuss with your doctor how best to take the medication, considering your medical history and the form of the drug. For instance, if you have trouble swallowing tablets, your doctor may suggest an oral formulation or an inhalant for administration via nasal spray. Finally, ensure that you have sufficient hydration before and during drug therapy. This will help prevent dizziness and light-headedness, which are both common side effects of the medication.

For patients with ED who are not able to obtain an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance, there is a variety of treatment options available, ranging from behavioral changes to pharmacological interventions. For some men, particularly those who have had a poor response to previous treatments, an implanted mechanical pump may be the best solution. This type of treatment involves the insertion of a small artificial implant (known as an intraurethral prosthesis) into the urethra, which is the tube that runs from the bladder to the outside of the body. The pump inside the implant is then attached to a plastic tube that runs to a small battery pack, which is worn around the waist. When the battery charges, it provides the necessary pulses of current for the pump to eject tiny bullets of medication into the urethra – resulting in an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. This option is suitable for patients who are not able to obtain an erection with sufficient firmness through other means and who want to avoid taking oral medication.

Why should I get vaccinated against the flu?

The flu remains one of the most common and dangerous diseases globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 10 to 20 million people are infected with the flu virus every year, resulting in approximately 300,000 to 500,000 deaths. (WHO 2019). The elderly and those with compromised immune systems are particularly at risk of severe illness and death from the flu. The most common and deadliest strain of the flu is the avian influenza A(H5N1). This virus can cause pneumonia, resulting in respiratory failure and death. It is highly contagious and has a high mortality rate. (WHO 2019). In light of this, it is extremely important to remain up to date with vaccinations, which provide protection against the flu. Fortunately, there are now preventative measures available for those who want to avoid getting sick with the flu or otherwise protect themselves and their loved ones from its risks.

Although Kamagra is a highly effective treatment for erectile dysfunction, for some, especially the elderly or those with comorbidities, it may not be the best option. In these cases, Fusalga tablets may be the solution. These medications contain the active ingredient Sildenafil Citrate, which is a PDE5 inhibitor. This class of medications was originally developed to treat pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs). However, it was also observed that many males with ED also had high blood pressure in the penis. It was subsequently theorized that treating the blood pressure in this area would result in improved erections. Although these medications are effective for erectile dysfunction, they can also have negative side effects. Like most prescription medications, there is a risk of serious interactions and adverse events, which are discussed below.

What are the risks associated with Fusalga?

Any risk associated with Fusalga is similar to those associated with Kamagra. Essentially, there is the risk of side effects such as headache, flushing, and rhinitis (runny nose). Less frequently, patients have presented with skin rashes and photosensitivity (an increased risk of developing a skin condition called erythema multiforme). Finally, ensure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in Fusalga. If you are, your doctor may suggest alternative medications or treatments. (EMA 2019).
