What is Return to Player (RTP) and Hit Frequency?

RETURN TO PLAYER

Return to Player (RTP) is the term casinos use for describing the amount of bets a VLT slot machine will pay back to players over the course of. For example, if make a hundred dollar bet on a machine that the RTP is 90%, you may expect to receive around $90 in wins. The two factors, RTP and house advantage are usually calculated over the long term. It is not advisable to bet money that could be lost.

RTP is the other side of house advantage, as you might have noticed. A machine that has a 20% house advantage is likely to have an average RTP of 80 percent. This means that the machine can keep approximately 20% of the cash and pay the rest to the players as wins.

Hit Frequency

Hit frequency is the word casinos use to describe the frequency at which a machine stops when it comes to winning combinations. A hit frequency of 8 percent means that the machine will stop when it hits a winning combination approximately 8% of the times. It is important to note that many VLTs and slots allow players the ability to wager on several lines at the same time. RTP % is that, in a single spin players can win one or more winning combinations, along with numerous losing combinations. It could appear that the player is winning more often but, as with all things with time, losing combinations will outnumber those winning ones.

There's a huge variety of hit frequencies that can be found between slot machines and VLTs. While some slots might have a hit rate of just 3%, other slots such as video poker may have a rate of up to 45 percent. While the rate of hit for video poker might sound attractive, keep in mind that nearly half of those "hits" result in the player winning back his original bet. Although a machine with an average hit rate of 3 percent may not sound appealing, it can allow players of winning a big jackpot. Progressive jackpot machines with large payouts have a lower hit rate, but larger jackpots.

Games with low hit rates are often perceived by players as "tight" due to the fact that the wins are often so dispersed when games with high frequency of hit are often perceived to be "loose" because there are several small wins.

Keep in mind that "hit frequency" is how often (on average) one winning combination can come up. "Return-to-player" is the percent or the amount that a machine returns over time.
