The Minecraft monster shows no signs of slowing down. Developer Mojang today announced that Minecraft has sold 100 million copies across all platforms, including PCs, Macs, consoles, and mobile. Around 53,000 copies of the game have been sold every day since the beginning. The game keeps players hooked as well -- more than 40 million people play in a Minecraft world each month and play around with blocks like an shovel, axe, and sword. There aren't many games that have reached 100 million players, except Tetris.

The game's open design, endless potential and achievement are the main factors that determine its success. Players can construct whatever they can imagine, provided its outward-facing geometry is composed of simple, vibrant blocks. Many players continue to play the game for years even though they're old. Mojang has been providing regular updates to the game, introducing new mechanics, creatures and materials. Its flexibility has made it a favorite in the classroom and can be used to teach art, geology and even coding.

When Microsoft acquired Mojang almost two years ago, people were wondering what it had planned for the game. A sequel? Perhaps an exclusive to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone? In fact it's not been realized. Minecraft is accessible on more platforms than ever before, and there's no word of a 'Minecraft 2.' Instead we have a HoloLens Minecraft version that is a spin-off of the adventure series from Telltale Games, and an acquisition by MinecraftEdu. MCNAMES This will soon result in a new educational-focused Minecraft. Soon there will be a special version for China as well.

Minecraft's popularity isn't waning. Minecraft's strength isn’t its finite story or its stunning graphics. It has a seemingly timeless appeal that attracts new children as they get old enough to play it. As long as that continues, Minecraft will continue to sell out in a staggering amount.
