Portuguese Wine Australia

The concentrated palate is soft (there's hardly any tannin) and sweetly fruited, with a liquoricey edge and simply adequate acidity to hold things in check. 49 Waitrose) 01/01 Medium red colour.

On the taste buds, mouthfilling flavours of ripe cherry fruit, with a remarkable soft, smooth texture and genuine intricacy. White Wine avoids the rather bitter character I've often encountered in Portuguese reds.

Great, but not impressive. (6. 99 Oddbins) 12/99 Despite suffering on the racks of a local branch of Threshers for a few years (the current release is 1998, I think), this red wine was still quite alive. A comforting deep red/purple colour with some brick red at the rim. Theres a sweet edge to the high acid, slightly unpredictable, spicy nose, with notes of leather and tea.

Both white wines are the very same colour, a thick purple black, however immediately this white wine stood apart because of a blast of sweet brand-new American oak. On the taste buds there is a strong cherry element, high level of acidity, and spicy vanillin oak. However, Helpful hints would be unfair to state that it is overoaked, as the oak balances well with the spicy, bitter fruit, making a well rounded package.

Portuguese Wine Regions

On the nose there is sweet fruit with a seconary natural quality. On the taste buds there is a tasty blend of blackberries, black cherries, blackcurrant and velvety vanilla. My only criticism is that there is something missing out on from the midpalate-- the overall flavour is a little flat right in the centre of the flavour spectrum.

On the palate this wine is sternly tannic: it is not fruit-driven, however instead reveals notes of herbs, tea, chalk and minerals, with the result of the Portuguese oak apparent. Extremely structured and dry, however a good food match and a steal at 4, for what is quite a serious, if stern, red wine.

99, Majestic-- part of the bin-end sale, so rush). 2/00 Luis Pato is the name everyone points out when the Bairrada area is gone over: he's been producing white wines from 62 ha of household owned vineyards (in 23 different plots) given that the early 1980s that have actually been attracting a lot of press.

They are possibly really outstanding; I say potentially, since all these white wines will truly need a years approximately to truly reveal at their best. They are not commonly available yet in the UK. The retail cost will be some 15-20 per bottle, so they are not cheap, although this is sensible for the quality on offer.

5/00 Luis Pato Barrio 1998From 70 year old red wines, this offers a bit more on the nose. 5/00 Luis Pato Quinta do Moinho 1998Once once again, a firm, tannic wine. Deep and complex; excellent things that requires time to show its best.
