An occlusal splint functions to dissipate the forces placed on individual teeth by utilizing a larger surface area covering all teeth in the arch. Once fabricated, a splint must be continually adjusted to re-establish equal contact, balance the load, and allow for muscle symmetry. An illustration of an extra-coronal (“extra” – outside; “coronal” – crown) metal splint bonded to the inside surfaces of the lower front teeth to provide stabilization. An illustration of an intra-coronal (“intra” – inside; “coronal” – crown) metal bar splint designed to stabilize loose back teeth (pre-molars and molars) where biting forces are greater. They are made of a type of plastic that softens when warmed, and you can then mold the splint to fit over your teeth. It is difficult to obtain an exact fit and they can cause permanent changes to the bite by moving the teeth.

  • These appliances can decrease the frequency but not the intensity of the bruxing episodes.
  • One of the most frequently-prescribed dental splints is the traditional flat-plane occlusal splint, which fits over the maxillary or mandibular arch.
  • At Impress we work with removable and invisible mouth splints to align the teeth and treat bite problems.

It can be applied later to reposition some of the teeth if necessary. Thermoplastic materials offer even greater patient comfort, capturing even deeper undercuts that offer more retention with less chance of breaking. Thermoplastic materials are created using liquid monomer and powder polymer that is cured under pressure and heat.

Bite and Body

Temporary Splints - The treatment period for dental splints is less than six months. At the end of 6 months, the dentist decides whether the teeth require permanent splinting or not. Stainless steel wires are also used in the inner portion of lower teeth. If the patient reports bruxism and headaches but no TMD, the use at night of a full-coverage splint, in which acrylic covers an entire arch of teeth, is often adequate to protect the teeth. Muscle relaxation is an added benefit that often relieves or eliminates tension headaches.

The weaknesses of this type of immobilization are that the metal thins and breaks with chewing, and it also prevents good oral hygiene, which leads to gingivitis . In other words, biting down on the Aqualizer® causes the fluid to distribute bite forces evenly across the bite, reducing TMJ pressure and pain and ensuring relief. By contrast, they enable the body to naturally balance itself, resulting in TMJ pain relief and improved function.
