RTP Return to player

Return to Player (RTP) and Hit Frequency: What Are These Mean?

RETURN to PLAYER (RTP).

Casinos use the term Return to Player to define the amount of funds that a VLT (or slot machine) will return to players. If RTP rate put 100 $1 bets on a machine with a RTP of 90%, you could expect to win about 90 dollars in winnings. RTP as well as the house advantage can be calculated over a long period of time. Almost anything can occur in the short-term (see the section on Short-Term Volatility and Long Term Predictability) So, it is important to only ever bet with funds that you are willing to lose.

RTP is the other aspect of house advantage, as you might have noticed. A machine with a 20% advantage in house will have an RTP average of 80 percent. This means the machine will keep 20% of the money it bets and pay the remaining percent to players who win.

Hit Frequency

Hit frequency is the number of times a machine will stop when it comes across a winning combination. If the machine's average hit frequency is 8.8 this means that it will stop once it hits the winning combination about 8% of times. It's important to know that many slot machines and VLTs let players bet on multiple lines each spin. It means that players is able to win one or two winning combinations and many losing combinations in the course of a single spin. To the player, it could appear as if he's winning more often, however, as with every other game eventually, the losing combinations will significantly outnumber those that win.

The frequency of hit for slots and VLTs can differ significantly. Certain slots have the chance of winning as little as 3%, whereas other games like video poker have an average hit frequency of 45%. While the hit rate of video poker might sound appealing, keep in mind that almost half of these "hits" are just a return on his original bet. Although a machine that has 3 percent of a hit rate may not seem appealing, it's likely to offer players the chance of winning a huge jackpot. Progressive jackpot machines with large payouts offer a lower percentage of hits but bigger jackpots.

Players often perceive games with low hit frequency as being tight because they are more difficult to win. Games that have high frequency of hits are viewed as less loose since they're able to win a lot of small wins.

Keep in mind that "hit frequency" is how often (on average) a winning combination will come up. "Return to player" is what percentage of all money bet that a machine is expected to pay back over time.
