Indonesia is the third-largest country in Southeast Asia and the ninth-largest country in the world. With a population of over 250 million people, it is definitely an interesting country to explore! In 2022, the country will host the famous Indonesian Athletics Championships, one of the largest international sporting events in the world. The country is very proud of their national sport and all the wonderful things it has achieved. It's definitely a country that you should know a little bit about if you are an athlete or a sports enthusiast that yearns for some glorious competition.

The History of Indonesian Athletics

As previously mentioned, Indonesia is extremely proud of their athletics and sports in general. The country has been producing world-class athletes for decades, and the sport definitely enjoys a high popularity in Indonesia. It is said that there are over 50 registered sports clubs in the country, with over 200,000 members (as of 2021). Interestingly, the country does not have a single football (*Golf) club but instead it has 14 cricket clubs. Indonesia has traditionally been a strong cricketing nation, with the sport being played professionally since the nation achieved its independence in 1945. Most probably this is due to the large number of volcanoes that the country is home to. Volcanoes naturally provide the perfect environment for the game: great pitch, hot sun, and cool evening temperatures. These are the perfect conditions for some glorious competition!

The Current Situation

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many sporting events had to be cancelled or postponed. For the Indonesia Athletics Championships, the meet was initially postponed until August, but it was later rescheduled for October. Luckily, the meet went ahead as planned and was attended by a grand total of 250 people (as of October). For other sports, such as football, the season was already over when the meet was due to take place. The good news is that the country now has a date to look forward to: the Indonesia Sports Day, which will be held on August 27, 2022.

The International Profile of Indonesian Athletics

It is interesting to compare the current profile of Indonesian athletics to that of other Southeast Asian nations. Indonesia is known to be a hotbed of athletics with many world-class sports stars emerging from the country. It is also one of the only places in the world where one can compete in different sporting events, such as running, swimming, and boxing, due to the large number of volcanoes that the country is home to. Indeed, there are more than 70 registered boxing clubs in Indonesia, making it the country with the second-highest number of registered boxing clubs in the world! It would appear that the country truly does love to fight (and win)!

Why Should You Visit Indonesia?

If you are an athlete or a sports enthusiast that yearns for some competition, then Indonesia is the place for you. At the moment, the country is welcoming visitors and is certainly an interesting place to be. If you are travelling to Indonesia, then you should certainly make the most of the opportunity and take a walk down memory lane by visiting some of the iconic sporting venues that the country is famous for. You can also take a tour around some of the most prominent volcanoes in Southeast Asia, which are all located in Indonesia. There are 14 of them, with the country's biggest volcano—Mount Agung—being the active partner of the event. With so much happening in Indonesia, it would be a shame not to make the most of the opportunity and pay a visit to this fascinating country. If you do, then you'll definitely want to check out the unogoal Indonesia website, as they have all the information you could want about the upcoming event.

Where To Stay In Indonesia

If you are visiting Indonesia, then where you stay will greatly depend on your itinerary. If you are in the vicinity of one of Indonesia's famous volcanoes, then you will most likely want to spend your nights at a hotel in the nearby town. Some of the country's most beautiful and iconic hotels are located near volcanoes, so naturally you will want to stay there if you can. If you want to venture out of the city, then you can stay at one of Indonesia's famous brand hotels, which are now offering incredible value for money. Traveling to Indonesia during these uncertain times is certainly worth considering, as many destinations around the world are closed to non-citizens. If you can get a group of friends together, then the Airbnb option is also a good option, as you can rent a whole house for a fantastic price that includes all the amenities you could need. These are just some of the options available to you should you decide to visit Indonesia in the near future.
