How to Use Epoxy Resin

from web site

Epoxy resin is a plastic adhesive that consists of two parts; The first part is a powder and the second is a liquid hardener. When properly combined with the powder, it forms a very hard, clear plastic. Epoxy bonds to both metal and wood and is used in the construction of many different products.

When using epoxy you should make sure the area to be glued is clean and dry; The temperature should not be too hot or too cold.
Once you have prepared the surface to be glued, mix the epoxy. Get more here about this or BGA underfill epoxy. In most cases you will need to mix it with 1 part hardener and 5 parts resin. It's important to mix the two in measurements that are as accurate as possible to get the best results. For more accurate measurements it can be a good idea to use plastic syringes, especially for small projects where you don't need a lot of epoxy.

When mixing, try to mix only what you will be using within a short period of time, as large amounts of epoxy give off toxic fumes, plus it heats up and can cause a fire. If you have a large batch to mix, it's a good idea to mix it up in a large metal container. Another disadvantage of mixing too much at once is that it will start to harden before you can use it all. It will probably make more sense to mix up multiple batches and avoid the waste of allowing a large batch to cure before it can be used.

To mix the hardener and powder together you will need a large wooden spoon or wooden stick depending on how much you are mixing. Keep stirring until the mixture is well combined, but not so long that it starts to harden.

Once mixed, the epoxy will only remain usable for about 15 minutes. When the consistency becomes gel-like you need to discard it and mix up some new epoxy. The temperature also affects how long you can use the mixture. In cool temperatures it takes longer to cure, but in hot temperatures it cures even faster than 15 minutes.

After applying the epoxy resin, it hardens into plastic within approx. 7 hours. The substance continues to harden about a week after application.

Epoxy is an extremely versatile adhesive and when used correctly, provides a strong bond when working with metals or wood.
