Magic Mike's Last Dance movie review

During a roundtable interview featuring Steven Soderbergh and Zoe Kravitz about their film KIMI The director discussed the anticipated third installment of the Magic Mike storyline, titled Magic Mike's Last Dance . Soderbergh also discussed encouraging Channing Tatum to keep telling the story. The film is in part an inspiration for Tatum's time as a stripper in Tampa, Florida.

Soderbergh was the director of Magic Mike, which was released in 2012. The film was a massive success with critics and audiences, who not just praised the sex appeal and dance sequences, but also the direction, script, and performances. Tatum appeared alongside Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, and Matthew McConaughey. Bomer and Manganiello would also return alongside Tatum for the sequel to Magic Mike XXL, this time directed by Gregory Jacobs, who was the first assistant director for the first film. The sequel was another success both critically and financially.

In the days when Magic Mike was still just one idea among many concepts, Soderbergh remembers pointing to it as the project Tatum should be focusing on. He explained that when Tatum presented the concept in the setting of Haywire and it instantly got his interest. Later, when the story was complete, Soderbergh was eager to join in to make the idea an actual possibility.

With a third movie in the works, which was that was announced in November, titled Magic Mike's Last Dance , Soderbergh offered us a small hint of what's to come when the film's final scene airs. He explained that while he was aware that his Magic Mike concept would be a success, he didn't think that Tatum was looking to expand the universe of the film to a wider world, one that deals with relationships, masculinity and respect. This was expanded in the second film.

"The third film is sort like the culmination of all that we've been talking about in this space. It's not just about taking the dance to another stage, but also exploring the relationship aspect that's been a major theme in all of the films. Mike has a romantic relationship that's at the center of this film, and all the while, everything else is taking place. This is the first time we've done it."

While Last Dance could very well be Mike Lane's last dance, Soderbergh's return to the franchise is an exciting one. After the XXL sequel we've made it to the top, however, there's more to learn about Mike's journey.
