I find myself loving my personal choice of the most terrifying horror film of all time, 1981's The Evil Dead, more and more each time that I see it. The same goes for the sequels (Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness) and soft reboots from 2013 which I do not really view as a pure remake, but would count among the best remakes of horror movies in the event that I were to. I am also noticing something different about this tale of intensely gory and often hilarious tales of demonic possession with every viewing.

The most recently re-watched of the original four Evil Dead movies in preparation for the quickly approaching fifth installment, Evil Dead Rise -- the one film I'm anticipating the most -- was certainly not an exception. So, how about you basic screwheads take a few minutes to read this overview of the cool things that came to me when I rewatched one of the greatest horror movie franchises in history? Let's begin at the beginning.

A few might write off The Evil Dead as just another cabin in the forest film, however a closer analysis of the scary, seminal classic reveals just how complicated director and writer Sam Raimi's screenplay really is. Take, for example the film's inventive use of foreshadowing, an element of the storytelling that , I'm ashamed to admit, didn't come to my attention until this latest rewatch. I love the way the film hinds at Cheryl Williams' (Ellen Sandweiss) future fate after she observes the door to the cellar opening and closing on its own early on, and when her older brother, Ash (Bruce Campbell, in the character that made him a great horror film icon), finds a drawing in the Necronomicon that is reminiscent of the book when the book "comes into existence" near the close of the film.

It's just that I've never noticed the way blood flows from a possessed Scotty's (Richard DeManincor, also known as Hal Delrich) stomach wound as if it were a tap until recently. However, this was the first time that I actually paid any mind to it. It seems like I was mesmerized by the image of blood which bears the look of cherry Kool-Aid instead of dyed corn syrup and I'm sure I'll appreciate its uniqueness more than I ever have and even if it is more precise in the rest of the series.

Another image from the bloody final scene of The Evil Dead that has never failed to mesmerize my attention is when arms exploding emerge into Cheryl and Scotty's defeated Deadite self. For a long time, I assumed that this was an additional example of the extraordinary visual skills of director Sam Raimi However, it occurred to me during this rewatch that these were demon arms and, more specifically, of the demons who possessed Ash's companions. Have you ever witnessed something so bizarre and terrifying in a horror film that is supernatural that deals with demonic possession, like the one in The Exorcist? I doubt it.
