What is A Course in Miracles?

Originally published in 1976, A Course in Miracles is a self-study a course in miracles spiritual thought system that combines profound spiritual teachings with far-reaching psychological insights. It has touched the lives of millions of people around the world and is considered by many to be the Bible of the “spiritual but not religious” (SBNR) movement.

The three-volume book of A Course in Miracles is organized as a curriculum consisting of the Text, which lays out the concepts that make up its thought system; the Workbook for Students, comprised of 365 daily lessons that emphasize experience over belief in a theology; and the Manual for Teachers, which provides answers to questions commonly asked by students. Although the Course uses Christian terminology, it is ecumenical and makes clear that it is but one of thousands of spiritual paths that lead to God.

Having initially been trained as an investigative journalist, D. PATRICK MILLER began writing about spirituality and human potential after a seven-year illness led him down a spiritual path. He has since intensively studied A Course in Miracles, the Enneagram system of personality, Jungian depth psychology, shamanism, and other related subjects, applying their principles and disciplines to his own life. He is the author of a dozen print titles, four of which appear on this site, and numerous e-books. He also teaches A Course in Miracles worldwide and is the founder of Fearless Books and Literary Services.
The Text

The 1250-page three-volume set of A Course in Miracles, first published in 1976, is a self-study system of "spiritual psychology" that combines profound spiritual teachings with far-reaching and practical psychological insights. It is both theoretical and experiential, with the Workbook lessons offering a daily practice of applying the principles. Although it uses Christian terminology, the Course is spiritual rather than religious, and emphasizes that a universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible, but necessary.

The Text contains the core teachings of the Course, and includes the "Clarification of Terms" and two pamphlets. It is not meant to be read as a book for entertainment or intellectual challenge, but rather as a guide for the awakening of the mind to the truth and love that is God's plan for everyone.

Kenneth Wapnick, the author of A Course in Miracles: Understanding the Message and Finding Peace, has made this edition of the Text clearer and easier to understand than its predecessors. He has also restored the original order of the first four chapters, which were rearranged and moved in the Foundation for Inner Peace edition. Material that had been added or deleted has been included, as have many footnotes and explanatory comments that were removed from the original editions.

A Course in Miracles is a source of inspiration for spiritual seekers the world over. It has been cited by such luminaries as Marianne Williamson, Wayne Dyer, and Gerald Jampolsky, and could reasonably be called the Bible of the so-called "spiritual but not religious" movement that has grown over the last few decades. Thousands of people worldwide have been deeply touched by ACIM, and though the Course is designed for individual study and practice, most students join a study group or one of the small number of ACIM churches that have developed.
The Workbook

Since the publication of A Course in Miracles in 1976, many thousands of people have been influenced by this spiritual classic. Many have read and studied it, and some have even become teachers of ACIM.

Unlike most contemporary religious writings, ACIM is both theoretical and practical. The Course’s unified thought system is profound, and it presents a revolutionary view of the universe and our role within it. Its metaphysics are closer to Eastern mysticism than traditional Christian doctrine. Its teachings directly challenge significant elements of Christianity, including the concept that Jesus died to atone for human sin.

A Course in Miracles is a spiritual classic, but its thought system can be difficult to understand and apply. This book helps readers decipher its most complex passages while offering practical, healing applications of the Course’s principles.

Kenneth Wapnick is a psychotherapist and ACIM teacher. He is a close friend and associate of Helen Schucman, who was the author of A Course in Miracles. He first saw the manuscript for the Course in 1973, and helped prepare it for publication. He has also taught ACIM to large groups, and he serves on the board of the Foundation for Inner Peace, which publishes and distributes the Course.

Pathways of Light offers a free daily audio lesson that takes listeners through one section of the Text and one lesson from the Workbook each day, along with a commentary. This is an excellent way to receive the profound teachings of ACIM throughout the day. The lessons are also available in a written transcript format. A tax deductible donation to Pathways of Light is appreciated. Your support helps keep this service available to all.
The Manual for Teachers

Since its first publication in 1976, ACIM has become a contemporary spiritual classic. It combines profound spiritual teachings with far-reaching psychological insights, and its words have reached millions of people around the world. Although a self-study course, many students eventually join with other teachers or with one of the small number of ACIM churches and other groups inspired by the Course.

The Manual for Teachers is unique among the three ACIM books, in that it teaches that there are two forms of teaching. The first is that of a teacher of God. This involves healing the ego thought system through forgiveness, with the goal of awakening to the truth that everyone is God’s Son and part of His perfect unity. The second form of teaching is that of a “Course sponsor.” This teacher, similar to an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor, accepts particular pupils and guides them along the Course’s path, endeavoring to give them all he knows until they have become teachers in their own right.

Kenneth Wapnick, a long-time student of A Course in Miracles, has dedicated his life to helping others understand and apply its principles. His depth of understanding of the Course’s thought system, combined with his clarity and humor, greatly enhance the learning experience of the students he teaches.

Kenneth has published several books on the Course, including his best-selling "A Course in Miracles – Text and Workbook for Students". He also gives a daily ACIM audio lesson that consists of reading one section of the Text and one of the lessons in the Workbook followed by a commentary. He speaks from Awakened Mind with Presence and Clarity, making the Course come alive for his listeners.
A Course in Miracles Online

A Course in Miracles is a spiritual teaching that has become a major movement in our time. It is a self-study curriculum that presents a way of life based on contact with an "internal teacher" (the Holy Spirit or "internal God"). Its teachings blend Christian terminology, Eastern mysticism, perennial philosophy, and modern psychological insights.

A profoundly practical book, the Course offers a step-by-step method for changing your perception of the world and turning fear into love. While the teachings of A Course in Miracles are not easy to understand, they can be learned by anyone willing to take the time and effort needed to change his or her beliefs about reality.

This Complete and Annotated edition allows you to experience the wisdom of the Course as it was originally scribed by Dr. Schucman, and contains extensive footnotes to clarify challenging passages plus an appendix of 33 cameo essays that outline ways to apply the lessons of ACIM in your everyday life.

ACIM is considered to be the "Bible" of the so-called "spiritual but not religious" movement that has grown in recent decades. It is believed that millions of people have been influenced by this change in social and religious perspective, although it is impossible to know exactly how many have studied the Course in some way.

The audio recordings of David Hoffmeister, a master teacher of A Course in Miracles, provide an opportunity to hear the deep teachings of this profound book. Each lesson, taken from the Course's Text and Workbook, is followed by a commentary that is both inspiring and illuminating. These CDs are available online or in stores worldwide. They are an invaluable resource for the student and teacher of ACIM.
