Jack Hamm, who lived from March 20, 1910 to December 8, 1987, was an American artist and author beloved for his creations of Donald Duck comics distributed by Walt Disney Productions.
When Hamm was only 18, his artistic prowess gained him entry into the enigmatic world of advertising. His ambition soon drove him further and he set his sights on the realm of comic books. Within no time, Hamm had conquered this domain as well. In 1934 he followed his budding success and moved onward to Disney where he continued to grow in his profession.
Hamm is renowned for his craftsmanship in the art of creating Donald Duck, a character whose image he first developed and articulated in the 1934 comic strip, “Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold”. During
pneumatic hand held rock drill following half-century, Hamm continued to skillfully depict Donald in countless other comic strips and stories.
Alongside the beloved Donald Duck, the prolific Walt Disney artist and storyteller, Carl Barks, also gave life to a range of other iconic figures, including those triple troublemaking ducks - Huey, Dewey, and Louie; the brilliant inventor, Gyro Gearloose; and Scrooge McDuck, the loveable Scottish closefisted miser. Not only that, but he also penned and illustrated numerous books for children that featured his Disney creations.
As his career drew to a close in 1984, Hamm stepped away from the role he served at Disney; care for the comics with which the company was associated. Even though he was retired, his love for artistry imbued him with a need to continue to work on Disney comics of his own volition. He continued this work until his eventual passing in 1987 and he was subsequently celebrated 6 years later when he was featured in the esteemed Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
Jack Hamm had an impressive oeuvre - it was well-known and immensely appreciated. He was also lauded for his remarkable dedication to his craft and his pursuit of flawlessness. Don Rosa, another famous Disney cartoonist, proclaimed that if you were after something that was pure excellence, you’d surely take it to Jack Hamm.
