Ryu Hyun-jin will return after 14 months against Baltimore, the No. 1 AL player, on the 2nd

In the second game, Ryu Hyun-jin (36) will be used as the starting pitcher to fight back. Toronto lost 2-4 in a home game against Baltimore at Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on the 1st (Korea Standard Time).

Toronto starter Chris Basit became a losing pitcher by allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings. Ryu Hyun-jin will start the home game against Baltimore at 8:07 a.m. Korean time on August 2.

It is exactly the first time in a year and two months that Ryu Hyun-jin will take the mound in a big league game since his home game against the Chicago White Sox on June 2 last year.

At that time, Ryu Hyun-jin, who had five hits and three runs in four innings and felt elbow pain, confessed, "I regret taking the mound today."

Ryu Hyun-jin underwent ligament surgery on his left elbow on June 19 last year. Ryu Hyun-jin, who wanted to avoid surgery, also expressed his willingness to rehabilitate with the goal of returning in July 2023 after the surgery was confirmed.

Although a little behind schedule, Ryu Hyun-jin will return to the mound as a "complete starter" through pessimism that it is very difficult for a pitcher in his mid-30s to undergo elbow ligament surgery and return to the full starting pitcher.

Toronto coach John Schneider said, "We do not limit Ryu Hyun-jin's number of pitches." Ryu Hyun-jin has been on the operating table four times in his baseball career. In April 2004, when he was in the second year of Dongsan High School, he underwent ligament surgery on his left elbow and rehabilitated for a year.

In May 2015, after entering the Major League, Ryu Hyun-jin, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder joint and pure suture for his career, was on the operating table again in September 2016 to remove necrosis tissue in his left elbow. The surgery in 2016 was relatively mild, with a shorter rehabilitation period than ligament joint surgery.

Ryu Hyun-jin made a comeback after surgery. Ryu Hyun-jin, who started his professional career with the Hanwha Eagles in the Korean professional baseball league in 2006 and dominated the KBO League, succeeded in advancing to the Major League in 2013.

In 2019, he ranked No. 1 in the Major League Baseball's overall ERA (14 wins, 5 losses, and 2.32 ERA), and also served as a Toronto ace with 5 wins, 2 losses and a 2.69 ERA in 2020 in the aftermath of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

However, in 2021, he struggled with a 4.37 (14-10) ERA, and last year, he ended the season early with a shabby report card of 2 wins and a 5.67 ERA in 6 games after suffering from elbow pain. Ryu Hyun-jin, who returned to the operating table for the first time in six years, also succeeded in rehabilitation by breaking through the barrier of "the age of mid-30s."The next goal is to re-emerge.

Ryu Hyun-jin, who signed a four-year, $80 million contract with Toronto in 2020, will expire after this season. Toronto plays its final game of the 2023 regular season on October 2. Ryu Hyun-jin, who has endured for 14 months, heralded a full-fledged pitching for the remaining two months.

The remaining two months' performance can be an important reference for Ryu Hyun-jin to decide between staying in the big leagues and returning to the KBO League. Baltimore, where Ryu Hyun-jin meets in his return match, is a quite burdensome opponent.

Baltimore leads the American League East with a winning rate of 0.610 and 64 wins and 41 losses. It is also the only team in the American League that maintains a 60% winning rate. There are many batters to watch out for.

Adley Rutchman, who had a batting average of 0.268, 14 home runs, and an OPS (on-base percentage + slugging percentage) of 0.792 this season, saw his OPS rise further to 0.870 against left-handed pitchers. Anthony Santander, who hit 18 home runs, was also strong against left-handed pitchers with an OPS of 0.823 against left-handed pitchers.

Although he failed to fill the regulation at-bat, Ryan Mountcastle also swung hard with a batting average of 0.319 and an OPS of 1.015 when he met a left-handed pitcher. Baltimore announced right-hander Kyle Brady as the starting pitcher on the 2nd
