Former Sun City Group CEO Alvin Chow sentenced to 18 years in prison

from web site

The trial of former Sun City Group CEO Alvin Chow has finally ended. Macau's first trial court sentenced former CEO Chow, who was in charge of the Macau junket vendor, to 18 years in prison, and found him guilty of several charges.

Chow, the founder of Sun City Group, a pioneer in attracting Chinese tourists to Macau to gamble, took the opportunity to invite both operators and players to Macau because gambling is illegal in mainland China.

Chow also has to pay a fine of HK$6.5 billion, or about $831 million. The fines will be paid to the Macau government as civil compensation, and the cause of such fines lies in income lost due to "bottom bets" in the Sun City VIP room. There are also rewards for the five recipients of Win Macau, Galaxy Entertainment Group, MGM China, Sands China and SJM Resorts.

A total amount of about HK$2 billion, or $250 million, was divided into concessions. WIN is worth HK$770 million ($98 million), Galaxy is worth HK$550 million ($70 million), MGM portion is worth HK$300 million ($38 million), Sands is worth HK$290 million ($37 million), and SJM's work is worth HK$17 billion ($22 billion).

Official ruling:

The verdict was announced Wednesday morning, more than four months after the trial began, with 21 people included in the trial process.

"I've been gambling illegally for a long time for illegal gains," Judge Louis-Enha said, referring to Chow's casino leadership

Macau law enforcement police have arrested Chow and 10 more on charges of criminal collusion, money laundering and involvement in illegal gambling. One in six people is awaiting trial in Coloan prison. The trial began in late November 2021.

In early December 2021, shortly after Chau's arrest, the company announced it was shutting down its junket business, while at the same time Chau stepped down.

Sun City Group is a major player in the industry with a notable interest in developing various complex resorts in major markets such as Vietnam, Russia, and the Philippines.

After arresting Cha, the prosecution applied 229 illegal gambling charges and 54 significant fraud charges, including criminal union charges, illegal gambling charges, and money laundering charges.

Questions Remaining:

The list of accusations doesn't stop here. Chow also grossed about $21.5 billion, or $2.67 billion. The source of the money was in the "pay below" action. He also defrauded the government and concessions.

The defense acknowledged the existence of illegal betting in Macau, but argued that there was insufficient evidence of Chow's involvement and other Sun City executives' involvement.
