An obstetrician is a physician who specializes in prenatal and pregnancy care, plus oversees vaginal and cesarean deliveries. Certified nurse midwives are registered nurses who specialize in the health of pregnant women and their babies, as well as providing prenatal care, labor and delivery support and postpartum services. In the immediate weeks following childbirth women need extra care, particularly from their partner and family. Labour and childbirth are physically demanding, and breastfeeding and looking after a newborn can also be stressful. It is important for women to rest and regain their strength.

Similarly, it is important for infants to receive a full examination within 24 hours of birth. This is particularly important if a baby had difficulty breathing at the time of birth and needed resuscitation.
