Government planning to close Yat Yuen Canidrome Club in Macau

from web site

In Macau, the government reportedly announced that it was considering turning the Macau Yatwon Canidrome Club into a cultural, leisure, sports and educational facility when the long-running Greyhound Racecourse closes next year.

The government of the former Portuguese enclave mandated that Asia's only greyhound racing facility be closed or relocated next year. The order, in response to ongoing protests from animal rights activists, reported annual revenue of just $600,000, down 82 percent from the previous 12 months.

In the face of this ultimatum, the Macau Yat U.N. Kanidrom, which has raced on the current site of northern Nosar Senhora de Fatima Parish since 1963, reportedly said it hoped to continue playing elsewhere but had not yet finalized its final plans for the future.

"The basic direction of the government is to develop relevant land sites to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood," Paulo Martins Chan, the regulator for gaming inspection and coordination, reportedly told legislator Kwanchui Port during a recent survey of the facilities. "We are considering modifying the land for cultural and leisure, sports and educational facilities after the Greyhound Racecourse has moved from the site."

The government intended to decide what to do with the Yat Yuen Canidrome site in Macau. The Asia Gaming Brief declared more recently that officials have learned more over the past few years that the region is experiencing a growing demand for sports facilities.
