Ohtani, the leading candidate to break the record distance home run of '154m' this year

He became the biggest star in the Major League by ‘doing his job as a pitcher,’ but in 2024, he plans to play only as a hitter. Let's talk about Shohei Ohtani, who became the LA Dodgers man. Will he be able to break the major league home run distance record?

On the 5th (Korean time), MLB.com looked at the records it hopes to break in the new season in 2024. Among them, the furthest home run in the 'Statcast' era was 505 feet (approximately 154 meters), and it was expected that Otagi could break this record.

Ohtani headed to the Dodgers as a free agent after the 2023 season. He signed a huge 10-year contract worth $700 million (about 920 billion won). He gained recognition on the major league stage as a pitcher and hitter.

In particular, he won the home run title as a hitter, leading to his second unanimous MVP award. Ohtani debuted in the Major League wearing the LA Angels uniform in 2018, and as a pitcher, he has 38 wins, 19 losses, and an ERA of 3.01 in 86 games. As a hitter, he has a batting average of .274, 171 home runs, 437 RBIs, and an OPS of .922 in 716 games.

In 2021, he appeared in 158 games as a hitter and had a batting average of .592 with . Last year, he underwent surgery on his right elbow in September, and was unable to complete the season as a pitcher. Nevertheless, as a batter, he recorded a batting average of .304, 44 home runs, 95 RBI, and a slugging percentage of .654 in 135 games.

Ohtani's home run distance was also significant. MLB.com said, “Ohtani recorded the longest home run in 2023, 493 feet (about 150 meters). “Because of his rehabilitation, he will be a full-time designated hitter in 2024,” he said. “He is in the National League West Division, so he will get seven opportunities at Coors Field.”

There are a lot of home runs at Coors Field. MLB.com said, “It rarely exceeds 500 feet. But Coors Field is a little different,” he said. “In 2016, slugger Giancarlo Stanton recorded 504 feet (about 153 meters). In 2022, CJ Cron again recorded 504 feet (approximately 153 m) at Coors Field.”

Coors Field, located at 1,600 meters above sea level, is a burdensome place for pitchers. This is because it is well known that the hitting distance increases by about 10%. Otani, who holds the record for the longest home run distance in 2023, is going to a stadium like this. Will Otani be able to break the record of 505 feet (approximately 154 meters)?
