Cantor Gaming opened its eighth race and sports book on Thursday, as the company continues to invest millions of dollars to expand its lines of business in Southern Nevada to include sports books, poker rooms, mobile and self-service wagering stations in bars and restaurants.
The new race and sports book is at the Silverton Casino Lodge Las Vegas.
"We have a new twist in 2013," Cantor Gaming President and CEO Lee Amaitis said. "Our mobile gaming platform will be upgraded for the iPad, iPhone and Android."
Amaitis said the updated mobile gaming platform will include several new games and upgrades of current games. He declined to identify any of the new games until they are approved by Nevada gaming regulators.
"The goal is to add value" to what our casino partners offer, Amaitis said. He added that none of the sports books and other lines of business would be possible without a significant investment, significant partners and significant technology.
He said Cantor Gaming has also developed a kiosk that should be ready by year's end.
"We expect to be very competitive in that sector," Amaitis said. "Our kiosk is in for approval."
The Silverton sports book is the latest project for Cantor Gaming, which owns and operates betting shops at M Resort, Tropicana Las Vegas, Hard Rock Hotel, The Venetian, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, the Palms, and the Palazzo.
The company recently announced a long-term deal with Golden Gaming LLC to operate its race and sports book at the Pahrump Nugget. The deal, which state gaming regulators still need to approve, will be the company's ninth sports book and first outside of Clark County.
Cantor Gaming will run the 2,000-square-foot space at the Silverton, which includes 38 viewing carrels and a high-definition video screen with 2.35 million light-emitting diode pixels. The video screen can show four featured sporting events and as many as 16 nonfeatured events simultaneously. Two additional screens display betting odds.
"I still believe (sports betting) is a marketplace, not a wager," Amaitis said. "Sports is a commodity and people trade commodities. This is a trading pit."
At the Silverton, Cantor Gaming will also operate a poker room, adjacent to the sports book. The company, which operates the poker room at the Palms, is still waiting for regulatory approval.
