Pittsburgh signs one-year contract with veteran catcher Yasmani Grandal

Pittsburgh Pirates recruit veteran catcher.

Local media such as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette quoted sources on the 12th (Korean time) and reported that Pittsburgh was recruiting catcher Yasmani Grandal (35).

Grandal had a batting average of 0.237, an on-base percentage of 0.347, and a slugging percentage of 0.426 in 1,235 games over 12 seasons in the major leagues.

He was once renowned as the best catcher in the league. From 2012 to 2021, he had an OPS of 0.807 and 172 home runs.

He played for the LA Dodgers from 2015 to 2018 and worked with Ryu Hyun-jin during this period.

During the same period, the defense recorded 74 DRS (Defensive Runs Saved). This is the second best record after Buster Posey, Yadier Molina, and Roberto Perez.

However, the last two seasons were poor, with a batting average of 0.219, an on-base percentage of 0.305, a slugging percentage of 0.306, and a DRS of -16.

Pittsburgh needed a new catcher as Andy Rodriguez, who took over as the starting catcher midway through last season, was confirmed to be out for the season due to Tommy John surgery.

Grandal is scheduled to play home alongside Jason DeLay and Henry Davis, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft.

Among them, Davis can also play as a right fielder, so there is a possibility that all three players will be included on the roster at the same time.

MLB.com evaluated this recruitment positively, saying that although Grandal's last two seasons were sluggish, he could add weight to Pittsburgh's home team, which lacked experience, and that a change in environment could be an opportunity for a rebound in productivity.
