From English, Spanish to Korean... Japanese pitcher Matsui's surprising first greeting

San Diego Padres left-handed pitcher Yuki Matsui (29) showed off his Korean skills in addition to English and Spanish.

According to Japanese media such as Daily Sports on the 12th, Matsui joined the team's spring training held in Peoria, Arizona, USA and conducted an interview with local media.

Matsui introduced himself in Spanish followed by English. He gave a greeting that he had prepared for about 1 minute and 30 seconds without a cheat sheet and expressed his gratitude to the team and his family. When he finished speaking, applause erupted from those around him.

Matsui explained that he prepared greetings not only in English but also in Spanish because “San Diego is close to Mexico.” At the same time, he made people laugh by revealing his honest feelings, saying, "I was nervous," saying that he consulted his English tutor and made sentences and practiced them hard.

In addition, Matsui even prepared Korean. When asked about his communication with Korean major leaguers Kim Ha-seong and Ko Woo-seok, with whom he met in San Diego, he answered in Japanese, "We only exchanged greetings." He then surprised those around him once again by saying in Korean, “I’m Yuki Matsui.”

Matsui, who played in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) until last year, fulfilled his dream of advancing to the United States by signing a five-year, $28 million contract with San Diego last December.

He had 25 wins, 46 losses, 76 holds, 236 saves, and a 2.40 earned run average in 501 career games in NPB. He, who played as a top closer in Japan, is expected to compete with Ko Woo-seok, who is making his first step into the big league.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this kind of tension. It’s a really good stimulus,” said Matsui, who expressed his excitement at the new start. “I don’t have any experience (in the big leagues) yet.
