Russia has gradually built up a force of close to 190,000 troops around the Ukrainian border over the last few weeks but maintained that it had no intention to invade – until last night. The UK is not protected from rising prices purely because it relies less on Russian gas. These LNG supplies are very sensitive to global market prices and are sold to those offering the highest price. Moscow’s ambassador to London previously warned that the UK would be hit with “immediate retaliation” if it tried to sanction Russia. Opposition leaders including Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer criticised the initial package of sanctions for being too soft.
