Um Hyung-chan signed a contract with the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball in July 2022 while he was attending Gyeonggi Commercial High School. In 2022, Um was rated as the top catcher in high school. He was called one of the big three catchers along with Kim Beom-seok (LG Twins) and Won Ju-gu Kim Gun-hee (Kium Heroes), and was evaluated as the most outstanding among them. If he chose to participate in the KBO rookie draft, he seemed likely to be nominated in the first round. The U.S. media outlet World Baseball Network recently reported Um's promotion to Single-A, saying, "Yum is looking forward to becoming the first Korean-born catcher in Major League history. Born in Seoul, the 20-year-old has been a member of the Kansas City Minor League since 2023, and has displayed consistent performances this year. His batting average of .31 OPS in 27 games has made him call up for Single-A. This is a significant moment and a significant leap forward in his career."

"Eom's best game was on May 14, when he had four hits in five at-bats for a double. He also added two hits on June 17 and 18. Through these games, he showed off his personal skills and proved in front of management that he deserves promotion."
