4) Test and receive your CDL. The CDL is required for anyone who wants to drive tractor trailers, buses, tow trucks, and other trucks which way at least 26,000 pounds. Most states require the future driver to be at least 21, although there are states that will issue a CDL to ages as low as 18. The CDL's are only good for the driver's residence, but if you want to get started early, hopefully you reside in one of these states. There are several endorsements that you can apply for once you receive your CDL, including Hazardous Materials and Tank Trucks, but those are for later in your career. Patience should be another quality of the truck driver since many others will cut him off, drive foolishly and selfishly. Other abilities that one must have are mental strength, ability to adapt, great driving skills that include knowledge of parking, backing, driving in bad weather and knowledge of rules and regulations. If you have what it takes, you will be a great driver and the money that you earn is quite good.
The advantage of going to a company school is they pay for the schooling and will guarantee you a job once you complete the requirements. Many find that this is the least expensive and most desirable way to get a job and a commercial driver's license.
If you are running early make sure to ask about delivering early. Wasting your drive time at a truck stop because you're early may be relaxing now, but when you consider what it may be costing you, you may reconsider. The sooner your empty, the sooner your on the road again.
