In any event, a push for term extension is being made across Europe. While the UK says it will work to extend musical copyright from 50 to 70 years, the European Union is considering a plan (backed by Commissioner Charlie McCreevy) to extend musical copyrights to 95 years.

RIAA is suing yet another person demanding over $1 million in damages for copyright infringement from a student for sharing songs on Kazaa as a teenager.

An intriguing part about the story is that during the investigation the parents of the student were forced to provide their home computer for RIAA to find evidence of copyright violation using the machine - even despite of the fact that they did not even own this machine at the time when Joel lived with them before going to college.

“This is clearly an organization that aims to make money illegally, with a chain of smaller sites that aims to systematically steal the creative work of others,” Tim Kuik, managing director of BREIN commented. He further said that the people who are responsible for the sites will be held accountable for the damages copyright holders suffered.

At first glance this seems to be a huge victory for BREIN, but the whole takedown operation probably took only one email. From the looks of it, the sites were all hosted at amenworld.com. The webhosting company, which cooperated with BREIN before, is likely to have responded to a takedown request, pulling the sites offline all at once.

U.S. District Court Judge Gary Feess told lawyers for Fox and Warners that a series of 1990s contracts between Fox and Watchmen producer Larry Gordon were so open to interpretation that he could not render a pre-trial judgment for either party, as the lawyers had requested.
Fox sued Warners in February, arguing that Gordon - who once ran Fox - assigned Watchmen rights to Warner that he didn't possess. Warner maintains that Fox holds no copyright on the movie.

You can still hear the Coldplay song elsewhere on YouTube, including in user-generated videos, so it seems likely that EMI is removing the comparison videos due to embarrassment on the part of Coldplay and/or legal ramifications for the ongoing Satriani suit, as Music Industry Blog posits. One imagines that a judge or jury would merely need to see one of these videos to conclude that there's a striking similarity between the songs... probably too striking.

The MPAA's faith in "filtering" is pure magical thinking. It presupposes invading the privacy of innocents and pirates alike by monitoring every packet on the Internet (which is bad enough when the NSA does it). And it ignores the reality of strong encryption, which will utterly defeat network filtering techniques (thus necessitating more intrusive alternatives — how about a copyright surveillance rootkit on every PC?). Sacrificing our privacy for the pipe-dreams of one industry is a bad idea.
