Vaadin is a new word in Liferay world, it looks very promised, but, as always, not so much documentation and tutorials. Some of tutorials too complex, some not covered some (even simple) questions.
Here I want to explain for Liferay developers already used Plugins SDK (and have experience in Liferay Portlets development) how to write simple Vaadin portlet and access Portlet and Liferay infrastructure (handle render request, access ThemeDisplay object).
Vaadin supports running applications as portlets, as defined in the JSR-168 (Java Portlet API) and JSR-286 (Java Portlet API 2.0) standards. While providing generic support for all portals implementing the standards, Vaadin especially supports the Liferay portal and the needed portal-specific configuration is given below for Liferay.
Vaadin is a framework for building rich internet applications which can be run as standalone web applications or as portlets. Liferay 6 includes support for Vaadin, but you can also deploy Vaadin application into Liferay 5.2.x portal.
This tutorial explains how to create a Vaadin application that can be run as a Liferay portlet by using the Vaadin Eclipse plugin.
Tutorial Liferay IDE
Liferay IDE is an extension for the Eclipse platform that supports development of plugin projects for the Liferay Portal platform. It is available as a set of Eclipse plugins installable from an update-site. The latest version supports developing 5 Liferay plugin types: portlets, hooks, layout templates, themes, and ext plugins. Liferay IDE requires the Eclipse Java EE developer package using either Galileo or Helios versions.
Now that Liferay 6.0 RC2 is available, we just released version 1.0 of the Liferay IDE. Thanks to everyone that has been waiting patiently. I know that I promised it last month so I hope it was worth your wait. Please note that the IDE only supports Liferay 6.0 RC2 and beyond at the moment.
Applying workflow on any assets in Liferay 6
Right now we are targeting the release of Liferay IDE 1.0 to be May 12. Hopefully next week I can make more details available for community members to actually get your hands on the preview build and help test. I know that several of you have offered and I will be taking you up on it, just not just yet. Until then I do have some videos I'd like to share with everyone so you can see where things stand currently. Below is an overview of some of the features that will be in 1.0.
The Semantic Web is an evolving development of the World Wide Web in which the meaning (that is, semantics) of information and services on the web is defined, making it possible for the web to understand and satisfy the requests of people and machines to use the web content.
Liferay goes Semantic Web! See ticket: Support RDF - Semantic Web.

One of the new feature in the upcoming Liferay 6.0 is the notion of a Team.
A community or organization can now group a set of user and create a team. The notion of a team is somewhat similar to a role but a role is a portal wide entiry while a team is restricted to a prticular community or organization. You can manage the permission to a team like a role.
