El proceso de aprendizaje es libre, autodidacta, sin retroalimentación, como sucede en la Wikipedia.
El trabajo colaborativo no genera un sentido de grupo, sino uno de colaboración por el conocimiento, a diferencia del trabajo cooperativo que se enfoca a su ejecución por un grupo que "ayuda a potenciar aspectos afectivos actitudinales y motivacionales y genera aspectos muy positivos para el logro de los aprendizajes" Martí (1996, 54); ; el hecho de pertenecer a un grupo con un objetivo en común permite estrechar lazos en los participantes y les genera sentido de pertenencia.
Claro está que el objetivo de un trabajo colaborativo es producir un conocimiento tangible, de utilidad general.
La enciclopedia Wikipedia es un ejemplo de plataforma colaborativa que tiene como fin la difusión libre del conocimiento mediante el trabajo arduo de millones de usuarios que a diario la están actualizando
