"Missing Conversation: COVID-19 Policies and the Silencing of Healthcare Workers"
what happens when policies that claim to protect our health, our “way of life,” and even the very foundations of our democracy end up destroying all three?
Our work documents not “hesitancy” or “misinformation” – framed today as major threats to humanity (Sell et al., 2021; WHO, 2021; World Health Organization, 2019) – but coerced consent, medical injuries, discrimination, and professional exile
noncompliant workers were portrayed as misinformed, irrational, or morally suspect. Ethical concerns, scientific debates, and questions about evidence were largely absent from the conversation

"he pandemic has exacerbated a global clampdown on free expression. In at least 45 of the 65 countries covered by Freedom on the Net, activists, journalists, or ordinary members of the public were arrested or criminally charged for online speech related to COVID-19"
Authorities justified the arrests through a myriad of laws that criminalize expression deemed to cause panic, instigate violence, spread hate, or insult officials, among other perceived harms
By passing new laws and arresting individuals for nonviolent speech, leaders attempted to control narratives about the virus’s spread, the government’s performance, and the negative social and economic implications of lockdowns.
In one of the world’s harshest examples, Zimbabwe’s emergency provisions have put internet users at risk of up to 20 years in prison for spreading false information about the pandemic

“collateral damage” (a military euphemism for wartime civilian casualties)
A central part of selling these extreme, and ultimately highly destructive, policies has involved the use of propaganda.

migrant labor, often illegal, is easier to exploit, cheaper, and increases consumption
The use of social welfare as a means of support for migrants rather than as a means to support citizens has placed Renaud Camus, who began his life as a socialist, on the right.
