This lesson can be aimed toward K-5 students and focuses on the subject of family uniqueness and tolerance within a diverse community. I would use this lesson in a first or second grade classroom specifically to create a unified environment where differences are appreciated as much as similarities are. This lesson requires that every student have an understanding of what makes their own family unique. In the weeks leading up to this particular activity, students would be encouraged to find out about their family stories and share them with the class. To mimic a "quilting bee" environment, students will sit in a large circle and create their own squares to add to a class quilt. These are drawn on paper and then combined in a random fashion to create a final quilt that represents all the diversities within families of the classroom community. This activity allows students to be creative and artistic while expressing what is important to them and learning about each other.
