In the mid 23rd Century, the Earth Alliance space station Babylon 5, located in neutral territory, is a major focal point for political intrigue, racial tensions and various wars over the course of five years.
In the year 2258, it is ten years after the Earth-Minbari War. Commander Sinclair takes command of a giant five-mile-long cylindrical space station, orbiting a planet in neutral space. At a crossroads of interstellar commerce and diplomacy, Cmdr Sinclair (2d season Captain Sheridan) must try to establish peace and prosperity between various interstellar empires, all the while fighting forces from within the Earth Alliance. It is a precarious command, particularly given that sabotage led to the destruction of Babylon stations 1, 2, and 3 and 4 vanished without trace.
Loved the intertwined plot with events from previous years episodes being explained later.
Great special effects that only improved over the five year span.
This series makes you think when looking at the religious perspective.
Very good show.
My personal opinion is that babylon 5 is quite possibly the best sci-fi series ever, perhaps closely followed by the remake of Battlestar galactica Unfortunately though the babylon 5 story is a 5 year long one that is an ACTUAL story spanning that period and not simply a series of unrelated stories.
That was both what made it special and what stopped many people from watching it I believe as most people I know didn't start watching it at the start and then said they "couldnt get into it" due to there clearly being ongoing aspects to the series and its storyline rather than just the short term plots occupying a single or a few episodes B5 is a bit like an onion with some story lines that literally span the entire series of 110 episodes and spill out into the films.
Others might only span a few seasons, some just one season, others a handful of episodes and others may only span a few episodes but those episodes are spread out over several seasons So to fully "get" babylon 5 people did really need to have watched it from the start because it really is one REALLY long story with a myriad of sub plots,
some excellent and thought provoking story lines and some insights into the dystopian future we are allowing our political parties to create for our children through apathy Watching this may seem like a daunting task but I would wholeheartedly recommend that anybody who enjoys science fiction should perhaps watch the first season start to finish (following the pilot film) and then see if they want to continue Later on as the shadow war develops and then in the last two seasons you will also be rewarded with some of the most immense space battles and most detailed special effects ever created for TV or the big screen with literally thousands of ships taking part in battles and an endless amount of unique special effects and CGI sequences unlike the constant reshowing of the same clips as seen in star trek et al Worth a watch IMO
