Batman faces his ultimate challenge as the mysterious Red Hood takes Gotham City by firestorm. One part vigilante, one part criminal kingpin, Red Hood begins cleaning up Gotham with the efficiency of Batman, but without following the same ethical code. Killing is an option. And when the Joker falls in the balance between the two, hard truths are revealed and old wounds are reopened.
There's a mystery afoot in Gotham City, and Batman must go toe-to-toe with a mysterious vigilante, who goes by the name of Red Hood. Subsequently, old wounds reopen and old, once buried memories come into the light.
I saw this movie because Batman is the only DC character who I actually like, and because this was considered the best animated movie in years. I checked it out, and got exactly what I expected. Batman is much more interesting in this movie, as we see his mistakes, and also that he is just as fallible as any other hero he isn't invincible. He loses the current Robin, Jason Todd, to the hands of the Joker, and the scene is shown completely seriously, and the music really helped with the scene as well. Skip to 5 years later, and a vigilante going by the name of Red hood, takes over All crime in the city and constrains it to prevent the death of civilians and children. He basically decides that crime cant be stopped, only controlled, and unlike Batman, he is perfectly willing to kill anyone who poses too much of a threat. This movie answers my biggest complaint with the character of Batman: why doesn't he kill the Joker? Even Bane is fine , why not Joker, who kills hundreds, and has no motive of doing so? Of course, I know exactly why, and have come to respect the character even more than I initially did. This was an awesome movie with great voice acting and very good animation and writing. Definitely one of DCs best products, but I think they are much more efficient at animation than anything.
The significance of Robin's demise at the hands of the psychotic Joker(John Di Maggio) is greatly enhanced in this solid Warner Bros. animated Batman opus as it pertains to the grand scheme of things. Batman(terrific voice work by the reliable Bruce Greenwood)couldn't rescue his sidekick from being blown to smithereens and has been plagued with guilt because of it.
Five years later, the Joker is locked away in Arkham, but a mysterious new crimefighter, one who isn't as dedicated towards the same moral code as Gotham's numero uno hero, named the Red Hood(Jensen Ackles)is holding power over the crimelords of the city, taking a cut from each gangster who owns a territory..Red Hood allows them to live and they fork over a percentage of their profits(there's ulterior motives to Red Hood's actions, however).
Red Hood is a pain in the ass of Gotham's major crime boss, Black Mask(Wade Williams), who doesn't take too kindly to someone muscling into his position, taking over as the man everyone fears. So Black Mask orders his men, including the "Fearsome Hand of Four"(a foursome with suits of armour and hi-tech weaponry such as laser technology that leads to plenty of buildings destroyed), to attempt to dispose of Red Hood, to no avail when Batman joins the fray. Batman is very interested in Red Hood's motivations. Red Hood allows Black Mask to run rampant on the crime bosses he's actually paid to protect, and it's all towards a higher purpose..and this involves Joker. Black Mask will, out of desperation, spring free Joker from Arkham, which will soon unveil Red Hood's ultimate plan. The plot also features an important role for aristocratic crimelord Ra's al Ghul(Jason Isaacs) and the "rejuvenating waters of the Lazarus pit" which allows him to remain eternally young despite having lived centuries.
What I really liked about BATMAN:UNDER THE RED HOOD was the underlying story of how even Batman can not save everyone and how Robin's fate continues to weigh on his conscience. You often see in stories involving Batman, the question of how far should one go to rid the streets of crime and those who conduct evil activities outside the law. Red Hood is willing to go further than Batman, to literally kill criminals in cold blood, not capture and hand them over to the police. Joker is the very symbol of the master criminal allowed to remain alive, imprisoned but breathing while so many others are dead at his hands. Batman is given a choice at the end by Red Hood whether to abandon what separates him from those he sends to prison..it does force Batman into a difficult position which certainly makes things interesting. Neil Patrick Harris provides some much needed humor as Batman's previous Robin, having grown up to become Nightwing, cracking wise and helping out his mentor before exiting the film surprisingly early. Di Maggio's voice is appropriately smarmy and vile, the relish of Joker's villainy coming through effectively. In regards to the Fearsome Hand of Four, I'd actually like to see them in their own movie, maybe as a heroic team instead of villains. Wade Williams' Black Mask is fashioned after those hot-tempered Italian mob bosses whose rage bursts with furious consequences, anyone who has a face in the way damaged by his volcanic eruption of anger. Riddler has a cameo in one of Batman's flashbacks regarding a young Robin in action. You get plenty of action in this Batman movie and a slick look. Not bad at all. I definitely must check out other Warner Bros. animated movies being released for DVD. But I'm a Batman guy so it isn't a surprise that I enjoyed this little movie.
