2013,Post-Apocalyptic America. An unnamed wanderer retrieves a Postman's uniform and undelivered bag of mail. He decides to pose as a postman and deliver the mail to a nearby town, bluffing that the United States government has been reinstated and tricking the town into feeding him. However, he reluctantly becomes a symbol of hope to the townspeople there who begin to remember the world that once was and giving them the courage to stand up to a tyrannical warlord and his army.
A nameless drifter dons a postman's uniform and bag of mail as he begins a quest to inspire hope to the survivors living in post-apocalyptic America.
I had to watch this one 3 times to pick up the finer points of the film. The first time I was a little taken back by the brutality and the seemingly randomness of the script. The second time I began to understand the message and the 3rd time I figured I knew this character pretty well. Costner's idea of hope being eternal and the fortitude of man after WWIII was a testimony to his personal beliefs that good will win every time. I felt the supporting actors did well, though could've been more evil. Costner is knocked a bit by critics because of his artsy ideas and executions of scripts. This movie rates highly in my book for the simple fact that it portrayed a seemingly selfish and unmotivated man who became a hero without any doing of his own. And through it all he grew up. That was Fate in action. Good story line, good ending. A little soft on romance, but maybe that's what he intended. Definetely a see again with a mature audience.
Although flawed, The Postman is definitely intriguing. The cinematography is flawless and makes me want to move to Oregon (if that is where they really shot it).
Kevin Costner does what he does best and that is playing characters that are put in unfortunate circumstances and miraculously he saves the day.
Some scenes could have been cut which would have given the movie a better pace. The scene when they travel up the mountain and eat the horse was a little hokey. Overall, The Postman is a movie I will watch multiple times.
Every truly awful movie epic has a point of no return, a moment when the accumulated bad lines and bogus sentimentality become so cloying that the best defense against a mounting queasiness is an awed amusement. The Postman, offers a new opportunity for levity every few minutes after its first hour.
Aside from condensing storylines, the film also eliminates a number of characters and science fiction elements from the story. A significant plotline in the book is the efforts of scientists at Corvallis, Oregon to use an artificially intelligent supercomputer to help rebuild society. Similarly, in the book the leaders of the Holnists are super soldiers who were experimented on by the military in order to augment their strength and speed. The film also eliminates the "Squire of Sugarloaf" a leader of a local community who the Postman tries to enlist to help in the fight against the Holnists 1998. 15 years earlier. The film is set in 2013. Yes. It would had gone stale and rotten, after being uneaten for many years and it would had made The Postman really sick. No. Days of Our Lives and Monday Night Football was in The Postman's mind. Michael had the viral disease Mumps since he was 12 years old, which is a common childhood disease and causes a rare permanent loss of fertility in adult males. Yes he did. 2 years earlier, Kevin Costner starred as The Mariner in 1995's Waterworld. Yes. Lily Costner is Irene March's granddaughter Lily. Joe Costner is the Letter Boy, whom The Postman takes his letter, when riding past his house and Annie Costner is Ponytail, the US postal service carrier, whom finds The Postman and Abby and brings them to the US postal service HQ. Abby mentions that when she was Bethlehem's prisoner, he tried several times to rape her. However, he couldn't "perform". This may suggest that he was actually homosexual, but was desperate to try and father an heir, despite him not being attracted to women. It's also possible he was simply impotent.
