After SAO is finally over, everyone is finally able to relax and just enjoy playing their favorite games and MMORPGs. But out of nowhere, Kirito is asked to meet with a government agent who had previously investigated SAO. Kirito was then informed of a man seemingly killing players in the real world, by shooting them in a game. Then Kirito decides to investigate this. He enters the game Gun Gale Online (GGO for short), as usual, he befriends another player in GGO. Then secrets they're searching for fall right at their feet.
The story begins in year 2022, a new video game called Sword Art Online (SAO for short) has just been released. The latest technology (the NerveGear) allows a player to be "literally in the game". Beta tester and solo player Kirito, re-enters this game. He then meets and befriends a newbie player named Klein. Soon, all the game's secrets spill from the shadows...
This anime is the best I have ever seen. Many complain that it slows down towards the middle, but it is my belief that during these so called "slow" episodes the main point of the entire series is driven home. Also the amount of emotion that was flowing through me throughout this series kept me enthralled the entire time. I have always been a sucker for a good romance, but the constant tension that is applied by the premise of this series takes the whole "love affair" to a hole new level. I can not recommend this show more highly for words fail to describe it. Hopeless romantics, I hope to see you on the other side for the journey this story has taken me on will affect me forever.
A good anime in general, but it has some major flaws that held back its potential.
The whole show revolves around Kayaba's act to trap the players in SAO. As such, the question of "Why did you do this?" is the basis for the entire moral ground of the story. Yet, the reasoning behind Kayaba's act was never fully revealed and left very ambiguous. This is a huge disappointment since it basically left the exposition of the story as a mere plot tool.
My second criticism is that the anime struggles to maintain the atmosphere of "life and death" situation. Simply put, the humor doesn't fit in with the fact that the characters are in despair every other episode. Serialization of characters, while appealing, deteriorates the atmosphere.
Third, unclear character development. Why was Kirito so shy of social interactions? Why did Asuna act so mysteriously at the start of the anime? And again most importantly, what is Kayaba's motives? Fourth, the plot of the second arc of the first season was very, very disappointing. It was just not strong enough in a sense, there were very little exploration on the morality of the characters; the main antagonist was basically a madman. Character development was scarce and the only few that did happen, felt like a filer. Neither did the sexual acts help. I strongly believe that the anime would be far better had it ended in the first arc.
Fifth, unclear scientific/realistic explanation. Why was the police unable to do anything to interfere with the SAO network or try to apprehend Kayaba's company? Sixth, lacked refinement in general. Less emphasis can be put during Kirito and Kayaba's duel to allow a better plot twist. The explanation that players are able to be moved to a hospital was given near the end of the first arc instead of the beginning.
