Peyton Westlake is a scientist who has discovered a way to produce synthetic skin. This could revolutionise skin grafting, except for one minor glitch; the synthetic skin degrades after 100 minutes of exposure to light. When gangsters attack Peyton, he is horrifically burnt, and assumed dead. In his quest for revenge, Peyton, aka the Darkman, is able to take on the appearance of anyone (using the synthetic skin,) but he only has 100 minutes per disguise. Scientist Peyton Westlake is working on a project to create synthetic skin. Now the skin he has developed has a flaw--it will not remain stable for more than 99 minutes. His girlfriend, Julie, a lawyer is investigating a developer. She leaves some incriminating documents at Peyton's. One night Peyton was working when the lights in his lab went out, he then discovers that the synthetic skin has remained stable past 99 minutes, he deduces that it's because of light that the skin doesn't remain stable. And it is at that moment that a psychotic criminal, Robert Durant appears demanding the documents that Julie left there. They beat up Peyton, and after finding the documents they blow up Peyton's lab. Peyton was blown away and everybody believes he is dead but in reality, he was found, burned seriously and a new procedure was performed on him that renders him unable to sense pain, he also now has tremendous strength and is now prone to violent outbursts. He is now working on perfecting the synthetic skin and at the same using his technology to make synthetic skin masks of the men who attacked him so that he could strike back at them. A dozen years before he made the first entry in the "Spider-Man" franchise, filmmaker Sam Raimi made this wonderful stab at comic book style fiction. In terms of pure entertainment, it's one of the best things he's ever done. It's got a lot of pathos, a lot of panache, and a nonstop delivery of truly exciting thrills. The cast is terrific, the makeup effects by Tony Gardner and Larry Hamlin are first rate, and old title design pro Pablo Ferro is used to create the opening titles and laboratory montages. There are some ingenious scene transitions, too.

Liam Neeson, not surprisingly, is excellent as Peyton Westlake, a scientist feverishly attempting to figure out a formula for creating synthetic skin. Soon his whole world is shattered when a gang of goons, working on behalf of a sinister city developer, invade his lab, murder his assistant, maim him, and blow up the place. However, Peytons' body is blown clear by the explosion, and he ends up in the hospital where doctors have developed a technique to keep burn victims like him alive. It just happens to give him increased strength, the inability to feel pain, and it amplifies his emotions to the nth degree. While trying to reconnect with the love of his life, lawyer Julie Hastings (an appealing Frances McDormand), he goes about seeking revenge on the bad guys who put him in his predicament.

Personally speaking, this viewer loves the melodramatics and the over the top nature that Raimi gives this movie. Graced with very good special effects in general, it comes up with some pretty clever scenes, and allows some of the actors the opportunity to play more than one role. The action scenes with the helicopter are a knock out; the stunt work is amazing. What's more, the villains are just so deliciously evil, including Aussie actor Colin Friels as the sleazy white collar creep Louis Strack and the under-rated Larry Drake as spooky henchman Robert G. Durant. Nicholas Worth ("Don't Answer the Phone!"), Dan Bell ("Wayne's World"), Dan Hicks ("Evil Dead 2"), Raimi's actor brother Ted, and Rafael H. Robledo play the rest of the gang. Bruce Campbell, John Landis, and an uncredited Jenny Agutter all have cameos, and Raimi's fellow directors William Dear, William Lustig, and Scott Spiegel have bits. This also marked the screen debut for actor Neal McDonough.

Danny Elfman's score is one of his most grandiose and enjoyable, and adds to the enjoyment of this impressive thrill ride. In short, this is one movie that holds up quite well 23 years later, remaining top notch escapism.

Followed by two sequels with Arnold Vosloo ("The Mummy" '99 and its first sequel) replacing Neeson as Darkman.

Eight out of 10. Those are just a few words I choose to describe Darkman. Watching the film was a great experience - and I'll remember this movie as being one of the movies that make you lose track of time, genuinely interested in what will happen next, and feel like you're somehow "part" of the movie.

The story is like a comic-book origin tale, but was written originally as a screenplay. Sam Raimi has excellent direction with this films and manages to do interesting, new things with the action and horror genres.

Occasionally some parts of the film seemed kind of amusing and silly, like the melodramatic acting at some points or the visual-effects, but I was seriously engrossed for the majority of the film. It's the perfect length, though I did feel that the ending was a bit abrupt, even though I liked the idea in the conclusion.

I would recommend this film about your not-so-average anti-hero protagonist, driven by consuming revenge and resentment for the villainous criminals that did him wrong, to any action film-buff or fan of Sam Raimi. It's certainly one of his better films. Perhaps a perfect rating may seem high for this film, but it simply reflects how much I enjoyed the film. Darkman, as unnerving as a gargoyle, is a classic nightmare, elegant and sumptuous, everything "Batman" should have been. But we're numbed after a while, as we are by the grotesquerie of the nightly news. Then again, maybe that's Raimi's intention. His work is beautiful in its scary way, and never only skin deep. According to Bruce himself at a UK convention in March 2008, he was never down for the role. He did confirm however that he supplied much of the voice work. The European DVD has a small cut due to it being distributed in the UK, where the BBFC used to have a problem with the depiction of certain Asian weapons in movies. It is hard to say. There is a shot that establishes where the line is and shows that Westlake is already standing very close to it when he gets there, so it is possible that he crossed it on the last throw when he knocked the bottles down and not realized it. If Westlake was paying attention, the fact that he is so certain that he did not cross the line would set the interpretation that the guy at the stand really was trying to cheat him. While both interpretations involve the aspect of his inability to control his temper making Westlake/Darkman more unpredictable, dangerous and susceptible to violence; only the one in which the guy actually cheated Westlake would involve him getting what he deserves when Westlake beats him up. Bottom line, if you want to believe that the scene's only purpose was to put further focus on Westlake's growing instability, then he did cross the line (though either way, the underlying meaning is there). But if you want to believe that the guy was being an unfair jerk, you'll say Westlake was behind the line. a5c7b9f00b
