The vampire myth is given a stylish 1960s treatment, where a human cop partners with a vampire cop to stop a vamp bent on creating a war between the two "separate but equal" races.
Set during the 1960s in an alternate New Zealand known as Nuovo Zelandia, PERFECT CREATURE imagines a world where vampires and humans peacefully co-exist, with the bloodsuckers the next step in human evolution. This delicate balance looks to be destroyed when an influenza epidemic begins to sweep the human population and one vampire turns to preying on humans. The church sends out Silus to catch the renegade vampire, Edgar. Silus joins forces with a human police captain, and discovers that Edgar harbors dark secrets.
Perfect Creature is set in a city called Jamestown where a brotherhood of Vampires live alongside humans in supposed harmony, it has been this way for 300 years but one brother Edgar (Leo Gregory) has developed a taste for human blood & has been feasting on local young ladies while his brother Silus (Dougray Scott) hunts him. Local police detective Lilly (Saffron Burrows) learns the truth behind the dead bodies turning up & tries to keep it quiet as widespread panic would break out, together with brother Silus the police & Lilly set out to find & kill Edgar but there's more to what Edgar is doing than just killing a few girls as he releases a virus which turns humans into ravenous Vampires. Jamestown is quarantined & the authorities feel complete extermination of everyone within it is the only answer including thousands of innocent uninfected humans...
This New Zealand & British co-production was directed by Glenn Standring & is a sort of moody atmospheric Vampire horror thriller that had the potential to be great but a lack of focus & a general pedestrainism means I would struggle to even call perfect creature average let alone good. The script is the problem here, there the usual romantic subplot about the two leads falling in love, there's no real explanation given as to why Edgar goes crazy & starts killing people & none of the other Vampires ever has, the whole virus angle is abruptly dropped into the story late on & is never really given a conclusion, there's a subplot about humans dying from flu which is mentioned a few times but nothing significant becomes of it & the typical clichéd final confrontation between the two brother's (hunter & hunted if you prefer) is present & correct although it's totally forgettable & uninspired stuff. The film didn't feel that long & it's visually interesting but the bland character's, the predictable plot, the subplots that go nowhere & add very little to the film overall & a lack of any real entertainment value means it's not really worth making any sort of effort to see.
As already mentioned the film does look very good with a variety of different eras & styles used to depict the fictional world seen here, from war torn streets to futuristic labs to Victorian style fantasy with a dark & brooding 40's detective noir thriller feel too, it's quite strange to sit down & watch these contradictory settings & time-lines & decor come together (horse drawn carriages & motor cars on the same roads at one point along with air ships in the sky). There's not much blood or gore here, a few bitten necks & that's about it. The CGI is OK but the early scene of Edgar climbing a wall looks terrible.
With a supposed budget of about $11,000,000 this wasn't cheap & that's a decent amount of money & one suspects that most of that went on the production design & look of the film. Filmed in New Zealand. The acting is alright but no-one seems to show much interest & with such thin character's one can hardly blame them.
Perfect Creature is average at best, a Vampire horror thriller than could have been great if a bit more time had been spent on the script & a decent story that meant something. It's not terrible & it's interesting visual style is cool but overall I couldn't really recommend it.
It's different.
It's futuristic and Gothic - with a 1930's style to it.
It's a nice change from the normal Hollywood overdone blood gore fest that is a huge bore.
This was fresh, with a story behind it and one that may follow.
It's nice to see characters who don't all look like surfers, models or Tom Cruise/ Bradd Pitt wannabe's.
It's got a cool story, good scenes and setting and the period and props relating to it was really cool.
This is one of the few vampire movies that I enjoyed.
While it is not at the top of my favorite films, it certainly isn't at the bottom.
I would have liked to see more action and fight scenes and that would have made this much better, but it was still cool.
Perfect Creature is based on a screenplay by New Zealand film maker Glenn Standring (who also directed the movie). The movie opens with a note that says the story takes place in "a world not unlike our own," so it can be assumed that it takes place on another planet or in some alternate reality. It was filmed in New Zealand, but most viewers say that the setting reminds them of 1940s Europe with some 19th century Dickens thrown in á la Steampunk. In the movie, the setting is Jamestown, a slum district of some bigger, unnamed city. Steampunk is a term used to describe fiction/fantasy movies in which the world runs on steam power as in the 19th century but may have elements of 20th century technology, e.g., televisions, dirigibles, cellphone-like communication devices, etc., or conversely be styled like the 18th century or time periods long before the steam engine was invented. Like traditional vampires, they sport fangs, drink human blood, are long-lived, and have superhuman strength and speed. It is the structure of their society that makes them very different from traditional vampires. Some 300 years earlier, the vampires organized themselves into "the Brotherhood" (they are referred to as "Brothers", not as "vampires"), gained control of (or possibly merged with) the Church, live the ascetic life of monks, and provide spiritual leadership to humans. In return, parishioners tithe their blood, which the Brothers always drink out of glasses, never taking blood directly from a donor. The Brothers are also the scientists of society. Their previous research into genetic science has allowed them to discover a genetic mutation which, when combined with a certain virus, changes human babies into Brothers. In the years since the discovery, however, all genetic science has been banned. If a spontaneous birth of a vampire occurs, the new Brother is immediately taken from the mother and raised in the Church. Finally, and most tragically, there are no female vampires. Silas instructs Detective Jones to inform the press about the water and about the Brotherhood's plan to burn Jamestown to the ground. He then goes after Lilly. When Edgar and Lilly sense Silas approaching, Edgar goes looking for him while Lilly tries to free herself from the handcuffs. In doing so, she attracts the attention of an infected woman who attacks her. In their tussle, the pipe breaks and Lilly is freed. She kills the woman then goes looking for Silas. Meanwhile, Silas has heard her screams, but before he can reach her, he is attacked from behind by Edgar. The force of the attack causes them both to plummet to the ground. With Silas knocked out, Edgar tries to force some of his blood into Silas' mouth, but Silas regains consciousness in time to prevent himself from drinking any of it. Silas and Edgar viciously fight each other until Edgar manages to impale Silas on a steam pipe. Silas quickly escapes, so Edgar picks up a steampump and threatens to burn off Silas' face. A hissing is heard, but it quickly becomes apparent that it is Edgar being injected. Lilly has managed to catch up with them, grab a steampump, and plunge it into Edgar's back. Edgar falls to the ground, dead. As Silas leads Lilly away. He stops in front of a building and tells her there is something precious inside that she must take and keep secret. He then kisses her and runs off. Lilly goes inside to find a dead woman and a Brother protecting a newborn baby girl. When the baby cries, Lilly can see the tiny fangs protruding from her gums. The Brother explains that the baby is a miracle, a "perfect creature," the first female vampire created accidentally from the virus that Edgar created. Lilly takes the baby into her arms and kisses her. In the final scene, Silas stands on the ledge of a building watching Lilly and the baby through a window. In a voiceover, he reveals that he's been branded a heretic by the Brotherhood and that they are now hunting him. 646f9e108c
