(1) Remarks on AI from NZ - by Neal Stephenson - Graphomane

"For the average person, AI is synonymous with large language models that have become available in the last couple of years through easy-to-use prompt-based interfaces. These have given non-technical users the ability to generate texts, images, and even movies that would have been beyond their reach before. Or maybe it’s more accurate to say that they’d have had to actually learn how to write, paint, or direct films in order to produce anything of the kind."

  • Maybe a useful way to think about what it would be like to coexist in a world that includes intelligences that aren’t human is to consider the fact that we’ve been doing exactly that for long as we’ve existed,
  • One is how much we matter to them.

The new economics of enterprise technology in an AI world | McKinsey

"nterprise technology spending in the United States has been growing by 8 percent per year on average since 2022.1 This surge is not surprising, given the increasing role technology plays in how businesses function and create value. The issue lies in what companies are getting for that spend, and the track record on that score is mixed.

While analysis linking tech spend to labor productivity is notoriously inexact, labor productivity has grown by close to 2 percent over the same period of time (Exhibit 1).2"

  • Data further show that the relationship between IT spend levels and labor productivity varies by sector, creating more uncertainty.

(1) New Models and Old Challenges - by Lee Bryant

"So many powerful new capabilities are emerging, especially in augmented coding; but we must not forget the human transition, risks and adoption challenges"

  • Enterprise AI agents are moving beyond simple chatbots as interfaces to information and automation, and will mostly work in the background and with each other, rather than competing for human attention.
  • this shift will shake up enterprise software and we can expect several players to battle it out in the hope of owning the role of ‘agent orchestrator’ in the enterprise. But in fact, as Deutsche Bank analysts recently suggested, Microsoft may be the goldilocks option here for many firms, given its commitment to agentic AI in the workplace.

Remote Work Should Be (Mostly) Asynchronous

"The pandemic accelerated many trends, from streaming, e-commerce, and food delivery platforms to the widespread adoption of remote work. But instead of taking advantage of this opportunity to improve how we work, most organizations simply took their offices online, along with the bad habits that permeated them. A move to a better way of working remotely is desperately needed. If your digital transformation is going to be successful, you need to give your employees the right tools and systems to work in a digital, distributed, virtual environment. However, digital tools are only as effective as how effectively you use them, and alignment between managers and employees on remote work best practices will be critical to the success of any digital transformation initiative"

  • Digital transformation should be a means to an end, but it often gets mistaken for an end in itself. This is partly why 70% of all digital transformation efforts fail — because they’re done purely for the sake of going digital without full consideration of the bigger picture.

  • Despite the elimination of commute times, people ended up working longer hours and less efficiently than before, resulting in more excessive workloads and less work-life balance, two key drivers of workplace stress.

Yes, HR Organizations Will (Partially) Be Replaced by AI, And That's Good – JOSH BERSIN

"That said, we have to be honest that AI is going to disrupt our role. This week IBM formally announced that 94% of typical HR questions are now answered by its AI agent, and the role of HR Business Partner is all but eliminated except for very senior leaders. As a result the CEO plans to reduce HR headcount and shift that budget towards sales and engineering."
